Coastal Zone Management

Climate change has no doubt put many pressures on our livelihood and ecosystems. One that has become quite sensitive to this is coastal areas. Not only does climate change bring significant impacts on sea level rise and coastal dynamics such as coastal flooding and erosion, but coastal communities (those that rely on coastal and ocean resources for their livelihood) are also those that are most vulnerable to these impacts of climate change. This is particularly true for Indonesia, with more than 17,000 islands (6,000 of which are inhabited) and over 99,000 km of coastline are threatened by various environmental as well as man-made pressures. It is therefore apparent that Integrated Coastal Zone Management (ICZM) should become one key important aspect of a wider environmental management in Indonesia.

ICZM requires first and foremost a clear coastal zone system, with each zone be dedicated to a specific land use and assigned a certain management and protection plan. This aligns with the government’s Law No. 1/2014 on Amendment to Low No. 27 /2007 on Management of Coastal Zone and Small Islands. Failure to comply to this regulation and build a systematic coastal management might increase the vulnerability of coastal communities, and the wider ecosystems, to climate change. In response to this pressing situation, we offer various solutions to effectively plan, manage, and assess coastal development programs.

Our coastal zone services range from coastal protection with structural, nonstructural and hybrid measures, coastal spatial planning, environmental assessment for coastal developments, coastal zoning system and assessment, as well as coastal ecosystem rehabilitation measures. We use and develop, for instance, a range of coastal, small islands, and Marine Protected Area (MPA) management toolkits from various sources and best practices all over the world. In addition, with our vast array of experiences in developing coastal zones for tourism planning, our services can expand as a basis to build a sustainable (refers to SDGs) by natural- and ecosystem-base  and integrated coastal zone management for the livelihood of many vulnerable communities in Indonesia.
